share. Determine whether a virus is considered or nonliving. Identify and give examples of the main classes of Kingdom Protista (Protozoans or Protists). Three main groups: Classify by Plant-like, Animal-like and Fungi-like and for each group find the follow: Metabolism Single celled and or multicellular 3 examples How they move 1 other Distinguishing characteristic

3 Bell Ringer 8-25-14 THE PEAT MOSS SCENARIO:
Norm wanted to know if adding peat moss to sand would affect its ability to hold water. He put 200 mL of pure sand into container A. He put a mixture of 80% sand and 20% peat moss into container B. He put a mixture of 60% sand and 40% peat moss into container C. He put a mixture of 40% sand and 60% peat moss into container D. He added water to each container and measured the amount of water the contents would absorb. He dried the sand and peat moss and repeated the experiment 5 times. He collected the following data. Composition of Mixture Water Holding Capacity (mL) 100% sand 60% sand, 40% peat moss 40% sand, 60% peat moss 80% sand, 20% peat moss Hypothesis? IV? DV? Control? Constants?

7 What is biology? The study of living things
All living things share certain characteristics

8 1. Made of 1 or more cells Unicellular (one cell) - ex. Bacteria
Multicellular (many cells) - ex. Animals, plants

9 2. Need energy to survive Autotrophs - get energy from sun
Heterotrophs - get energy by consuming nutrients from their environment

10 3. Respond to stimuli in their environment
Stimuli - factors in the environment that living things react to (ex. Light, temperature, sound, etc.)

11 4. All living things reproduce
Sexual - two sex cells required (sperm and egg) Asexual - only one parent cell is needed

12 5. Grow and develop Each cell divides to make new cells (cell division) – results in growth Some cells become specialized and perform different jobs than others (differentiation)

Evolution - gradual change in a population of organisms over time Individuals DO NOT evolve

18 Bell Ringer 8/27/14 Susie wondered if the height of the hole punched in the side of a quart-sized milk carton would affect how far from the container a liquid would spurt when the carton was full of the liquid. She used 4 identical cartons and punched the same size hole in each. The hole was placed at a different height on one side of each of the containers. The heights of the holes were 5, 10, 15, and 20cm from the base of the carton. She put her finger over the hole and filled carton to a height of 25cm with liquid. When each carton was filled, she placed it in the sink and removed her finger. Susie measured how far away from the carton’s base the liquid had squirted when it hit the bottom of the sink. . Hypothesis? Control? IV? DV? Constants?
