Mr. Langton 9/24/2015

Do Now (5 minutes!) Title: 8 Characteristics of All Living Things Write in LT, BAME, Evidence, and How I can Improve DO NOW: How do living organisms respond to their environment? Give 3 specific examples.

BAME Lab notebook is missing more than 4 of the following items: Title, Page #, Date, Learning Target and Self- Assessment, and Do Now Lab notebook is missing no more than 2 of the following items: Title, Page #, Date, Learning Target and Self- Assessment, and Do Now Lab notebook includes: Title, Page #, Date, Learning Target and Self- Assessment, and Do Now Lab notebook includes: Title, Page #, Date, Learning Target and Self- Assessment, and Do Now & Student clearly has put thought into Do Now

NORM  As a class, we will work towards this  We justify our answers with evidence so that we can learn from our mistakes.

Agenda  Do Now  Lab Safety and Equipment Quiz  8 Characteristics of All Living Things  Alive or Not Alive  Self-Assess Learning Target  Wrap Up

1. Made of 1 or more cells  Unicellular (one cell) - ex. Bacteria  Multicellular (many cells) - ex. Animals, plants

2. Need energy to survive  Autotrophs - get energy from sun  Heterotrophs - get energy by consuming nutrients from their environment

3. Respond to stimuli in their environment  Stimuli - factors in the environment that living things react to (ex. Light, temperature, sound, etc.)

4. All living things reproduce  Sexual - two sex cells required (sperm and egg)  Asexual - only one parent cell is needed

5. Grow and develop  Each cell divides to make new cells (cell division) – results in growth  Some cells become specialized and perform different jobs than others (differentiation)

6. Maintain homeostasis  Homeostasis – a relatively stable internal environment (within a certain range) - (ex. Human body temperature (approximately 98.6 degrees F))

7. Have a universal genetic code  All living things have DNA  DNA passes on genetic information from one generation to the next

8. Adapt and evolve over time  Evolution - gradual change in a population of organisms over time  Individuals DO NOT evolve

Alive or Not Alive (5 minutes) Using Post-It notes, label 4 categories:  Alive  Never alive  Once was alive  Not sure  Use the 8 characteristics of Living Things to categorize the items

Self-Assess LT (5 minutes) BAME I have little to no understanding of the learning target. I have some understanding of the learning target. I have a solid understanding of the learning target. I have a solid understanding of the learning target and I am able to help my peers have a solid understanding

Wrap Up Coming Up  Scientific Process and Inquiry Due by Friday for Grade:  Lab notebook (Title Page, Checking for Organization)  Signed Syllabi Form  Survey  Signed Lab Safety Contract
