14 Ragtime – Ragtime is a style of popular music that began in America Its main identifying trait is its ragged or syncopated rhythm. Performing this required great skill, musicians began to “compete” with eachother. less concerned with musical values, designed as they were to reach a large and undiscriminating audience (not as formal as art music)

After the Civil War, soldiers in the South pawned their instruments This left a cheap, ready supply of instruments for newly freed slaves. They formed bands and played out on the streets, a tradition still very much alive in New Orleans.

General Characteristics: three or four wind instruments a rhythm section – some combination of piano, tuba, drums, guitar or banjo trombone outlines harmonic progressions clarinet improvises above and below main melody collective improvisation  all instruments solo at once.
