KMT Review

The ideal gas law states how pressure and volume are related to temperature. These are the macroscopic quantities of gas. The kinetic molecular theory shows how individual gas particles interact with one another. The kinetic molecular theory contains a number of statements compatible with the assumptions of the ideal gas law.

From textbook p 249, 1. All matter is made up of very small particles (atoms and molecules)

2. There is empty space between particles

3. Particles are constantly moving
3. Particles are constantly moving. The particles are colliding with each other and the walls of the their container A. Particles of a solid are so tightly packed together they cannot move around freely. They can only vibrate B. Particles or a liquid are farther apart and they can move by sliding past each other C. Particles of a gas are very far apart and the move around quickly

4. Energy makes particles move
4. Energy makes particles move. The more energy the particles have, the faster they can move and the farther apart they can get.

More detailed explanation
Knowing this might help you go from a 3 to a 4.

1. Gases are composed of a large number of particles that behave like hard, spherical objects in a state of constant, random motion.

2. These particles move in a straight line until they collide with another particle or the walls of the container.

3. These particles are much smaller than the distance between particles. Most of the volume of a gas is therefore empty space.

4. There is no force of attraction between gas particles or between the particles and the walls of the container.

5. Collisions between gas particles or collisions with the walls of the container are perfectly elastic. None of the energy of a gas particle is lost when it collides with another particle or with the walls of the container.

6. The average kinetic energy of a collection of gas particles depends on the temperature of the gas and nothing else.
