1 The Book of James Lesson 18 Chapter 3 vss. 3-6

2 James 3:3–12 (NASB95) Now if we put the bits into the horses’ mouths so that they will obey us, we direct their entire body as well. Look at the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by strong winds, are still directed by a very small rudder wherever the inclination of the pilot desires. So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things. See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire! And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by hell.

3 James 3:3–12 (NASB95) For every species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and creatures of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by the human race. But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God; from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way. Does a fountain send out from the same opening both fresh and bitter water? Can a fig tree, my brethren, produce olives, or a vine produce figs? Nor can salt water produce fresh.

4 The Tongue; It's Power and Effect
James 1:19–20 (NASB95) This you know, my beloved brethren. But everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger; for the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God. Proverbs 10:19 (NASB95) When there are many words, transgression is unavoidable,But he who restrains his lips is wise.

5 The Tongue; It's Power and Effect
James 3:1 (NASB95) Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a stricter judgment. 2 Timothy 2:15–16 (NASB95) Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth. But avoid worldly and empty chatter, for it will lead to further ungodliness,

6 The Tongue; It's Power and Effect
James 3:3–5 (NASB95) 3 small bit directs entire body 4 small rudder directs entire ship 5 small flame sets forest ablaze

7 It's not Your Mouth That is the Problem
Romans 3:12–14 (NASB95) ALL HAVE TURNED ASIDE, TOGETHER THEY HAVE BECOME USELESS; THERE IS NONE WHO DOES GOOD, THERE IS NOT EVEN ONE.” THEIR THROAT IS AN OPEN GRAVE, WITH THEIR TONGUES THEY KEEP DECEIVING THE POISON OF ASPS IS UNDER THEIR LIPS 14 “WHOSE THEIR MOUTH IS FULL OF CURSING AND BITTERNESS;

8 ??? It's not Your Mouth That is the Problem
Matthew 12:34–35 (NASB95) “You brood of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak what is good? For the mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart. The good man brings out of his good treasure what is good; and the evil man brings out of his evil treasure what is evil.” ???

9 Your Mouth IS Tameable... 4 Ephesians 2:3–6 (NASB95) Among them we too all FORMERLY lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest. But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,

10 Your Mouth IS Tameable because your heart is changed
4 Galatians 5:16–21 (NASB95) But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law. Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

11 ! Evidence of “James” Faith 4
Colossians 4:6 (NASB95) Let your speech always be with grace, as though seasoned with salt, so that you will know how you should respond to each person. ! Just ask

12 Evidence of “James” Faith
4 Ephesians 4:29–32 (NASB95) Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear. Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.
