2 Use a colon between two sentences when the second one summarizes or explains the first. Example: His explanation for being late was believable: He had had a flat tire on the way. Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible in 1957, during the height of the Red Scare. He meant the play to be taken as a metaphor for the political situation at the time. Each of you will be given a small part to “research” about McCarthyism and the Red Scare. Be prepared to share your discoveries at the next class, teaching the class about your small area of expertise.
