18 McCarthyism in The Crucible Quote and Citation “They believed, in short, that they held in their steady hands the candle that would light the world. We have inherited this belief, and it has helped and hurt us” (Miller, 1952, p. 5 – 6). Explanation and Connection to McCarthyism Miller makes an early connection between the people of Salem in 1692 and those of Washington in the 1950s stating that both believed the information held would bring clarity to the world. Both groups are blinded to rational response because this believe provides a superiority complex, one that both helped and hurt Americans.
