1 Literary Analysis: Body Paragraphs and Conclusion
Mrs. Pelletier English 1

2 Body Paragraph Review Each body paragraph should present ONE new idea that develops the thesis Each idea should be supported by AT LEAST 2 pieces of evidence One piece of evidence = coincidence At least two pieces of evidence = pattern Don’t use all quotes or all paraphrases Use a paraphrase if only the idea/event is important Use a quote if the diction and/or syntax are important Cite all evidence! Analysis should be significantly longer than the evidence. Avoid saying things like “this shows” and focus on the specifics of your evidence. The last sentence of each paragraph should be used to transition to the next idea, not summarize the paragraph.

3 Conclusion Do NOT summarize your essay! Your audience just read it, so you don’t need to repeat what you’ve just said. The main objective of the concluding paragraph is to answer: SO WHAT? Conclusion should focus on the story’s impact on the readers and connect the story to real life. Consider the following questions: How can we apply what you discussed about the story to more common and realistic situations? Now that we learned this about humanity, is there anything we can do?
