2 Cardinals vs. ordinals Cardinal number- one, two, three
From the Latin cardō, cardīnis m “hinge” Ordinal number- first, second, third From the Latin ordō, ordīnis m “order”

3 Cardinal Numerals From only 4 cardinal numerals are declinable in Latin- one, two, three and thousands We learned ūnus, ūna, ūnum last week

4 Duo (two) M F N N: Duo Duae Duo G: Duōrum Duārum Duōrum D: Duōbus Duābus Duōbus Ac: Duōs Duās Duo Ab: Duōbus Duābus Duōbus * Why are there only plural forms?

5 Trēs M/F N N: Trēs Tria G: Trium Trium D: Tribus Tribus Ac: Trēs Tria Ab: Tribus Tribus

6 Mīlle (thousand), mīlia (thousands)
Singular – MFN Plural- N M/F/N N N: Mīlle Mīlia G: Mīlle Mīlium D: Mīlle Mīlibus Ac: Mīlle Mīlia Ab: Mīlle Mīlibus In the singular- indeclinable adjective In the plural- declines like a neuter 3rd declension i-stem noun (preview for tomorrow!)

8 You try! Translate the following:
Trēs puellae duōbus virīs rosās dedērunt. Three girls gave roses to two men. Caesar cum quīnque hominibus venīt. Caesar came with five men. Illae septem fēminae animālia timuērunt. Those seven women feared animals.

9 Ordinals The ordinals are regular! Hooray!
They follow the adjective pattern Primus, a, um (first) Secundus, a, um (already learner) Tertius, a, um (third) Decimus (tenth) Centēsimus (100th) Etc. (more on page 500)

10 New Genitive Uses Genitive use you know so far?
Possession New use: genitive of the whole/partitive Indicates the WHOLE of something in the genitive after a word designating the PART Pars urbis (part of the city) Nihil temporis (nothing of time/no time) Used with mīlia and neuter nominative/accusatives like satis, aliquid, multum, plūs, minus, satis Can also be the neuter singular of 2nd declension adjective Quid novī?- What is of new (what’s up?) Nihil certī- nothing of certain (nothing certain)

11 New Ablative Uses Ablative uses known so far?
Prepositional phrases, means, manner, accompaniment Ablative with cardinal numbers To express the idea of the whole with cardinal numbers/quīdam/paucī use Ex or Dē + ablative Quattor ex amīcīs meīs (four of my friends) (I have lots of friends) VS! Quattor Discīpulī (four students) (I only have four students)

12 Ablative of time WHEN or WITHIN WHICH
Represented with the ablative WITHOUT a preposition Translate “at”, “in”, or “within” Eō tempore nōn poteramus id facere. At that time we were not able to do it. Paucīs hōrīs veniēmus ad mūsēum. Within a few hours we will go to the museum.
