Literary Elements Plot/Context Ramos – Unit 1 – The Tequila Worm

2 Focus for learning I will demonstrate analysis of a text by making notes and annotations during a close reading activity. I will read to identify the plot of a story, by identifying the conflict, climax, falling action and resolution.

3 Climax This is the turning point in the story. The main character comes face to face with the conflict, and usually they change in some way. Rising Action This part of the story develops the conflict. Usually the author builds interest in the story through suspense. Falling Action Loose ends of the plot are tied up and the conflict is solved. Plot Diagram Resolution The story comes to a reasonable end Exposition: Usually occurs at the beginning of the story. Setting (context) and characters are introduced as well as the main conflict.

4 Conflict Conflict is the issue in a narrative around which the whole story revolves. The conflict includes a struggle between two opposing forces (usually protagonist and antagonist). Conflicts in stories can be either internal or external. Internal: Conflicts that a character (usually protagonist) has within themselves when they experience two opposite emotions or desires. External: Conflict that a character has with an outside force, usually with the antagonist, which hamper their progress.

6 Step 1: Read Indepednently
Read through the story “Chanclas” on your own. Make sure you are making annotations and taking notes in the margins. At the end of your reading, please write in your notebook what you think the internal and external conflicts are in the story.

7 Step 2: Share your ideas Share what you wrote down as the internal and external conflicts with your shoulder partner.

8 Step 3: Teacher Read-aloud
As Mrs. Ramos does a read/think-aloud, if you would like to make any changes to your own notes, do so at this time.

9 Step 4- Read to answer TDQs
What is the climax of the story? What is the falling action and resolution of the story? Discuss how the narrator’s feelings changed from the beginning of the story to the end.
