mystery: usually includes a mysterious death or a crime to be solved foreshadowing: hints about what is to come in a story red herring – a special type of foreshadowing where an author gives hints or details that DISTRACT from the true end of the story suspense: the feeling of excitement or anxiety that readers feel as they wait to find out the outcome of a story; created when author’s use foreshadowing

main character: usually a detective who eventually solves the mystery by logical inference from facts also presented to the reader And Then There Were None is different! suspects: other characters in the story; each suspect must have a motive and a reasonable opportunity to commit the crime motives– reasons for committing the crime; must be weighed and evaluated by the reader

overt clues: clues and evidence about the crime or murder that are presented DIRECTLY to the reader hidden evidence: important details and evidence that are presented in a way that they seem unimportant inference gaps: areas of the story where the author does not tell the whole story; the reader must fill in these gaps by connecting information that IS presented

5 The Detective Story Your job as a reader of mystery:
to put together the puzzle pieces offered by the author to figure out the mystery to take moral satisfaction from the solution to the mystery = to feel like justice was served and the guilty were punished
