3 Remember the states of clay??
Greenware: Slip Plastic Cheese-hard Leather-hard Bone-dry Bisqueware: Bucket glazes are applied to ware Glazed ware: KILN FIRED/VITRIFICATION KILN FIRED /GLAZE MATURES ON BISQUE

4 Glaze is only applied to BISQUEWARE Never try to glaze greenware!

5 What is a glaze? SILICA (glass) METALLIC OXIDES (colorants) Alumina (hardener) Flux (lowers melting point of glaze) Lots of water!!! LT has a 2-room BUCKET SYSTEM. All glazes are in buckets. You will primarily DIP AND POUR glaze onto your work.

6 Glazes can be GLOSSY, MATTE, TRANSLUCENT, or OPAQUE All will make your work more attractive and waterproof.

7 Glazes need to be FIRED onto the ceramic
Glazes need to be FIRED onto the ceramic. In the end…Glazed ware is fired twice. 1st firing = bisque fire 2nd firing = glaze firing They look different BEFORE AND AFTER the firing.

8 Think of glaze as SYRUP. As the kiln heats up, the glaze will bubble up. As the kiln cools, the glaze will settle on the surface. Do not try to control exactly where the glaze will be. Glaze will move while firing…The best you can do is select attractive color combinations and layer creatively.

9 2 coats of glaze are recommended.
2 coats of white = boring! 2 coats of brown= boring! 1 coat of white ON TOP of 1 coat of burnt umber= New and interesting glaze combo! – yeay! Always record your glaze combinations!!!

10 Examples of bowls with 2 different glazes layered (2 coats total) with some additional sprinkling or splattering on the top… Boring!!! Only one color!

11 BUT, Gravity will cause glaze to droop…so don’t add too much
BUT, Gravity will cause glaze to droop…so don’t add too much! Or it will hang off sides of pot or puddle on kiln shelf, or get stuck to stilt. Glaze will stick to whatever it touches… ALWAYS CHECK THICKNESS OF GLAZE BEFORE DIPPING WORK INTO BUCKET! SHOULD BE LIKE MILK!!!NOT A MILKSHAKE!

12 Getting started… Look at the glaze examples and test tiles and choose a combination. Use the worksheet to record the combination For example: *waxy white __chum plum___ und blue rutile Third detail Second dip First dip

13 YOU ONLY GET 1 CHANCE TO GLAZE CORRECTLY!!!!!!!!

14 STEPS… RE-HYDRATE bisqueware is very porous…do not use too much water or glaze won’t stick! MIX 1st GLAZE WELL!!! DIP INTO GLAZE QUICKLY and let dry before second coat. Mix 2nd GLAZE WELL DIP QUICKLY IN SECOND COLOR and let dry well. MIX 3RD COLOR AND DRIZZLE DRYFOOT bottom of pot and ¼ inch up sides and clean out any holes… PLACE ON GLAZE CART.
