What is glaze? Glaze is liquid glass; melted onto the surface of a ceramic piece Like other forms of glass, it provides a nonporous skin which lengthens the pot’s life and make it easier to clean. Glazes are made of mostly silica and various other elements. Question: After what stage of clay do we add glaze to? Bisque

How does glazes work? Cones are used to measure temperatures in a ceramics firing. I buy a certain number of cone, and when it falls over in the kiln, it means firing has reached the appropriate temperature The approximate temperature equivalents for the various cone, however the cone actually falls based on the total amount of heat it absorbed, not the maximum temperatures it reached, so the temperatures can vary. Well Let Review How a Kiln Works!

Reduction VS Oxidation Firings Reduction- keeps the oxygen from reaching your glazes (gas firings) (high firing and low firing like Raku Oxidation- is typically done in an electrical kiln, basically because it is hard on the electric kiln elements to do reduction- oxygen-straved atmosphere

Glazes Temperatures Low Fire 06-04; can get vivid, bright colors which are difficult or impossible to get at higher temperatures High Fire cone 9-10 Mid Fire fall in between, and are fired at cone 4-6 QUESTION: What firing temperature do you think we will use ? LOW FIRE 06-04

Other types of Glazes Underglazes- are used to consistent colors that stay where you put them, sometimes cover with a clear or translucent glaze Overglazes- are primarily accent products applied after pieces that have previously been glazed fired

Stains- can be wedged into clay to color it, added to clear glazes or made into a thick liquid and used for drawing on or coloring clay, similar to a slip Slips- watered down clay; colors Question: What is different between glaze and slip? Glaze is liquid glass and slip is water down clay

So,How do you glaze piece of pottery? Dipping Pouring Brushing Spray Question: How many coat do you use to cover a pot? 3 coats

What to Do Before Glazing Pottery?

OOPS? Faults and Remedies Mrs. Humphrey….. WHAT WRONG WITH MY PROJECT?

Any Question About what is glazes? Alright, time for tour of glaze operation and much more explaination Let move to ceramic studio!!! Get out your bisque ware!!
