1 Ecological analysis of Thailand
Student Number: BDC332 practical faculty November 2018 Please use this template to answer your Practical Exam Question. Ensure you have YOUR STUDENT NUMBER on the Title Page and this PowerPoint file is renamed to reflect your student number and the country you analysed. The completed PowerPoint needs to be put onto a computer and you attach your name to the computer. The data includes that downloaded from IUCN Red Data List, DIVA GIS, WWF Ecoregions, Protected Planet, and ESRI. You may add images but please credit/attribute them using an in-text numbering system and a reference list on the final page. BCB/ESS Kingdom of Thailand

2 Introduction location
Thailand is landlocked with the surrounding countries Burma, Loas, Malaysia and Cambodia. These countries are situated on the south-west portion of Asia

3 Landuses and landclasses of Thailand

4 Biodiversity description andthreats
Thailand has a vast number of ecosystems, thus, contributing to the great amount of biodiversity aspects. The country is landlocked therefore, there is no connecting with the ocean. threats to biodiversity in Thailand consists of a vast raange of poaching, deforestation due to agricultural expansion and illegal timber harvesting, destructive fishing practices, pollution, and disturbances caused by major infrastructure development. Introduction Biodiversity Description: In summarized point form describe the country's biodiversity capital (assets) and threats to its biodiversity conservation. YOU MAY USE SEVERAL SLIDES TO EXPLAIN THIS SECTION.

5 CURRENT PROTECTED AREAS
Methods Prepare a map of the current Protected Areas Network. The prepared map should include a title, scale bar, North direction, a comprehensive legend and a fully descriptive caption. DO NOT DISTORT THE MAPS.

6 Ecoregions of Thailand
Thailand consists of 13 ecoregions

7 CONSERVATION TARGETS Percentage and Species penalty factors
Methods Prepare a map of Conservation Targets: Identify at least TEN potential conservation targets that are suitable for a national conservation plan for your selected country in the context of their contribution to a global biodiversity conservation strategy. Targets need to be prepared as individual Boolean RASTER distribution maps. Please provide Species Penalty Factors for each Target. YOU WILL USE SEVERAL SLIDES TO SHOW these Conservation Targets. The folder contains zipped files that you select from or you can go to the IUCN Red data website to get other data ( ). The prepared maps should include a title, scale bar, North direction, a comprehensive legend and a fully descriptive caption. DO NOT DISTORT THE MAPS.

8 CONSERVATION planning units (ecological)
Methods The Ecological planning unit was used to create a conservation plan for Thailand. The Ecological planning unit includes the catchments, the elevation as well as the rainfall within Thailand

9 CONSERVATION planning units (Systematic)
Methods  The systematic conservation planning unit centres on managing, designing and locating protected areas that signify the biodiversity of each region. The SCPU also includes selecting and designing the protected area network which functions together to gain the conservation objectives.

10 CONSERVATION planning tenure Evaluating Protected areas
Methods This map indicates the protected areas within Thailand

11 CONSERVATION planning Explaining Marxan
The care concept Methods The C.A.R.E. concept. Connected: guarantees that there is adequate room being provided for the species to be mobile within the surrounding areas and it’s habitat. Adequate: Certifies/guarantees that there is stability in the future and current of the species. The target has to be met so that the system can function. Representation: this system is best for the protection of habitats and species. This system should by all mean be able to feature numerous plans within the conservation section which should make sure there is a replacement if a natural disaster is to take place. Efficient: this system is grounded on the conservation targets which requires that the system should take humans into consideration. in addition to this due to the basis of the cost efficiency as well as the livelihoods of urbanization.

12 Systematic CONSERVATION planning Explaining Marxan
Marxan explination Methods Use this slide and simple drawings or flow diagrams to explain the core concepts of MARXAN. You should not use the IDRISI dialogue boxes. Ensure you use proper annotation and include a descriptive caption.

13 Systematic CONSERVATION planning Explaining Marxan
The parameters used to run marxan analyses: Boundary length modifier:2 Repeat runs :1000 Species missing if portion of target lower than 0.95 Ran mode: Apply simulated annealing followed by iterative improvement Annealing controls Number of itersation: Temperature decreases: 1000 Iterative improvement type:normal iterative improvement Cost threshold Enabled Threshold: 1600 Penalty factor A:9 Penalty factorB:2 Starting proportion is 0 Run marxan Methods In summarized point form describe the parameter options you should select for the final RUN of the MARXAN analysis. You may use dialogue boxes to explain this section. (You do not need to run MARXAN as it would take too long to do the runs).

14 Expected Results Systematic CONSERVATION planning
Explain using Diagrams the results you would expect to obtain from MARXAN. They do not need to be the actual results rather the form of the MARXAN outputs you would expect. You may use more than one slide to prepare this section.

15 Sources of data, attribution and acknowledgements
Idiris Selva Diva GIS WWF Thailand Thanks to Dr. Knight References Ensure you provide full credit to source of information, Programs used, and referencing/attribution of referenced material. You may use more than one slide to prepared this section.
