1 Energy Flow in an Ecosystem
Chapter 23 Section 1

2 What is a food chain? A food chain is a series of events in which one organism eats another and obtains energy. The sun produces energy Grass gets energy from the sun The cow gets energy from eating the grass You get energy by eating a hamburger

3 What Organisms are there in a food chain?
made up of Decomposers Producers First-level Consumers Third-level Consumers Second-level Consumers

4 Important Terms Consumers-- an organism that obtains energy by feeding on other organisms. AKA: Heterotroph Herbivore—eat only producers (plants) Carnivore—eat only consumers (meat) Scavenger—eat dead remains of organisms Omnivore—eat both producers and consumers

5 More Important terms Decomposers- break down wastes and dead organisms and return the raw materials to the environment Producer-- an organism that can make its own food. AKA: Autotroph

6 REVIEWING THE CONCEPTS
What starts the food chain? What is an organism called if it makes its own food? What are examples of consumers? NOT IN THE NOTES

7 Food Chains Decomposers Bobcat Third-level Consumer Weasel

8 Not in your notes!!

9 What is a food web? A food web is the pattern of overlapping food chains in an ecosystem.

14 REVIEWING THE CONCEPTS
What is a food web? What organisms are at the base of the food web? Every food web needs...? NOT IN THE NOTES

15 Energy Flow in Ecosystems
23-2 The producer obtains 1,000 kcals of energy from the sun.

16 Energy Flow in Ecosystems
23-1 The first-level consumer obtains 10% of the energy of the grass.

17 Energy Flow in Ecosystems
23-1 The second-level consumer obtains 10% of the energy of the grasshoppers.

18 Energy Flow in Ecosystems
23-1 The third-level consumer obtains 10% of the energy of the ground moles.

19 Purpose of the energy pyramid?
To show the amount of energy that moves from one feeding level to another in a food web. Facts: 1. The greatest amount of energy is available at the producer level. (ex. Grass) 2. The least amount of energy available is going to be at the top of the food chain. (Ex. Owl)

20 Questions for Review Which level on the energy pyramid would need to eat more food to get enough energy? Why? Which level on the energy pyramid does not need to eat as much food to have enough energy? Why? Which level does not eat other organisms? Why?

21 Questions for Review Which level on the energy pyramid would need to eat more food to get enough energy? Why? 3rd-level consumer The amount of energy passed down keeps decreasing. Therefore, the 3rd-level consumer needs to eat more to have enough energy. Which level on the energy pyramid does not need to eat as much food to have enough energy? Why? Which level does not eat other organisms? Why?

22 Questions for Review Which level on the energy pyramid would need to eat more food to get enough energy? Why? 3rd-level consumer The amount of energy passed down keeps decreasing. Therefore, the 3rd-level consumer needs to eat more to have enough energy. Which level on the energy pyramid does not need to eat as much food to have enough energy? Why? 1st-level consumer or a herbivore gets energy from a producer. Producers have the most amount of energy since they receive their energy directly from the sun. Which level does not eat other organisms? Why?

Why? 1st-level consumer or a herbivore gets energy from a producer. Producers have the most amount of energy since they receive their energy directly from the sun. Which level does not eat other organisms? Why? Producers, because they obtain energy directly from the sun and they use that energy to produce their own food.
