1 Asexual Vs. Sexual Reproduction
7th grade Science SPI Compare and contrast the fundamental features of sexual and asexual reproduction.

2 Types of Asexual Reproduction

3 What is Asexual Reproduction
Asexual reproduction is a mode of reproduction by which offspring arise from a single parent, and inherit the genes of that parent only Primary form of reproduction for single-celled organisms  Shorter life span Grows very rapidly Contains one parent Identical to the parent

4 Binary Fission The cell divides and separate creating a daughter cell
Examples are prokaryotes and bacteria cells

5 Budding The buds grow into fully matured individuals which eventually break away from the parent organism. Examples are yeast, sponges, corals, jelly fish and hydras

6 Fragmentation A new organism grows from a fragment of the parent.
Examples are fungi, moss, sea stars, and planarians

7 Asexual Question What are some animals that go through asexual reproduction? How many parents are involved with asexually reproduction? What do the offspring look like in asexual reproduction? What are some advantages of reproducing asexually? What are some disadvantages of reproduction asexually?

8 Sexual Reproduction

9 What is Sexually Reproduction
Sexual reproduction is the creation of a new organism by combining the genetic material of two organisms. Requires two sex cells – egg and sperm The egg and sperm join to form an entirely new organism Longer life span Takes longer to grow Contains two parents Different from the parent Goes through the process of meiosis

10 Examples of Sexual Reproduction
Plants- Pollen is delivered to female part of the plant Insects Humans- DNA from 2 individuals merge to form one Animals- Internal or External merge of DNA to form one

11 Sexual Questions What are some animals that go through sexual reproduction? How many parents are involved with sexually reproduction? What do the offspring look like in sexual reproduction? What are some advantages of reproducing sexually? What are some disadvantages of reproduction sexually?

12 Review Sexual Asexual Type of Reproduction Methods Advantages
Disadvantages Sexual Internal fertilization Diversity in offspring Offspring less likely to have mutations show up Requires a mate to reproduce Population increases are limited External fertilization Asexual Budding Can increase populations rapidly Does not require a mate for reproduction to take place Lack of diversity in offspring Because they reproduce offspring genetically identical to parents, the offspring inherit any mutations of the parent. Fragmentation Binary Fission

13 Compare and Contrast Asexual Sexual
