What makes the Upstate of South Carolina a region?
Definitions
Urbanization - The growth of an urban area through industrialization and rural migration to the urban centers.
Industrialization - Build up of a nation's industries. The latest industrialization in the United States occurred during the early 1900s.
Central Business District - The large business center of a city.
Edge City - Outlying larger buildings centered away from the CBD common in expanding cities.
Capitalism - An economic belief that allows for the economy to be driven by consumer wants.

2. Change over time
Part of human history includes examples of how places have constantly changed over time. Adoption of new technology, population growth, and the urban shift have created the change we see now.

3. New York
New York City is an example of the United States’ efforts to industrialize. Furthermore, it shows the urban growth and flux that built the city up to its economic height.
New York’s population has exploded over the last century. Due to the industrial revolution, rural workers sought reliable jobs in urban factories. Take a look at the growing population of New York

4. Charleston
Believe it or not, Charleston represents another example of change over time.
Charleston is one of the largest ports in the United States. What is a company that based in the area? Did you know if you google search “port of…” Charleston is the first result with “instant completion.”

5. Charleston (cont.)
Population 25,500, and more than three times that drive through the town daily.
BMW and Amazon have produced more jobs in recent memory than most other companies.
After textile industries crashed, manufacturing industries like BMW took over. With direct trade with Charleston and GSP so close, you are sitting near a huge trade hub.

6. The Rust Belt
A vernacular and informal name for the area from Pennsylvania to Michigan. However, what makes this the rust belt?
Three large companies: GM Ford and Dodge held a strong presence in this area, but what cause the heavy industrial region to “rust.”

This area saw a boom during the Industrial Revolution and continued to grow until the shift of industry to the eastern countries. (Japan and China.)
With the internationalization of American industries, places like Detroit and Pittsburg were hit hard by the shift. They’re economies are still recovering, while most have begun to build.

7. The Breadbasket of America
A breadbasket is a region where the grain crops produce a large surplus. In other countries, it is coveted so many countries go to war for more grain.
The United States produces over 40% of the world’s corn crop output. This area spans much of the great plains, and along with wheat helps make up for the huge grain farming system in the heartland of the nation.

8. So, why are regions grouped in such a way?
The South, and especially this area, is called? Why?
What about the term “Western Countries?”
What about “Eastern Countries?”
