1 ADDING INTEGERS

2 11.2 Notes ADDING Integers The sum of two positive integers is positive. The sum of two negative integers is negative. Opposite signs – subtract the bigger from the smaller and keep the bigger number’s sign. ADD, ADD, ADD INTEGERS Same signs add and keep, different signs subtract, keep the sign of the higher number, then it’ll be exact!

3 I can… Self Assessment Add positive integers Add negative integers
Add negative and positive integers Self Assessment 5- I can do it without help & teach others. 4- I can do this with no help, but I don’t know if I can explain it. 3- I can do this with a little help. 2- I can do this with a lot of help! 1- I don’t have a clue.

4 Modeling Integer Addition
= Positive 1 = Negative 1 Model 3 + (-5) Step 1 Represent Step 2 Group Step 3 Remove 3 + (-5) = -2

5 Modeling Integer Addition
= Positive 1 = Negative 1 Model 2 + (-4) Step 1 Represent Step 2 Group Step 3 Remove 2 + (-4) = -2

6 Your Turn… -2 + 5 = 3 Model -2 + 5 = Positive 1 = Negative 1
Step 1 Represent Step 2 Group Step 3 Remove = 3

7 Using the Number Line 3 5 + -2 =
Step 1: Starting at 0, plot the first integer on the number line. Step 2: Plot the second integer on the number line beginning where the last number left off. = 3 -2 RAJ What is an integer? Pair share Pull sticks Which example is positive integer? Choice A -4 Choice B 9 Tell your partner how do you know which one is a positive integer? Use a sentence frame 的 knew that _ is a positive integer because_ Repeat for negative integer. 5

8 Using the Number Line -3 + -1 = - 4
Step 1: Starting at 0, plot the first integer on the number line. Step 2: Plot the second integer on the number line beginning where the last number left off. = - 4 -1 -3

9 Using the Number Line Step 1: Starting at 0, plot the first integer on the number line. Step 2: Plot the second integer on the number line beginning where the last number left off. = -9 -7 -2

10 Using the Number Line -2 + 7= . 5 7 -2

11 Absolute value is always positive
Absolute Value Review A number’s distance from 0 …-3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3… │-3│= 3 │3│= 3 Absolute value is always positive

12 Rule 1: Adding (+) Integers
The sum of two positive integers is always positive. 5 + 1 = 6

13 Rule 2: Adding (-) Integers
The sum of two negative integers is always negative. -5 + (-1) = -6

14 Rule 1: Adding (+/-) Integers
Subtract the lesser absolute value from the greater absolute value. Use the sign of the greater absolute value. = (-10) = -3

15 Karaoke Time! Same signs add and keep, different signs subtract, keep the sign of the higher number, then it’ll be exact! Sung to the tune of “Row, row, row, your boat”

16 Adding Integers Continued
5 + (-1) = 4 = -4 -5 + (5) = 0

17 Let’s Check 1) 5 + 6 = 11 -3 + (-2) = -5 -6 + 5 = -1 8 + (-7) = 1
1) = 11 -3 + (-2) = -5 = -1 8 + (-7) = 1 = 0

18 Karaoke Time! Same signs add and keep, different signs subtract, keep the sign of the higher number, then it’ll be exact! Sung to the tune of “Row, row, row, your boat”
