Presentation on theme: "What on earth is geography?"— Presentation transcript:

1 What on earth is geography?

2 No! Hey, do you know what a thematic map is?
No! How do you know about all this stuff? Have you heard of the Kombai tribe in Papua New Guinea? I’m learning about the world through geography!

3 Geography is the study of the Earth… … and the people on it.

4 What is geography? When you hear the word ‘geography’, what do you think about? What images or words come to mind?

5 What do geographers do? They ask questions…
Where is it? Why is it there? What is there? How is it changing over time? What can we do to make a difference? What are the effects of it being there? Should it be like this?

6 What can be done to change this?
Or put into practice… Where is this place? Who can help? How do the people feel? What is this place like? What has happened? , What can be done to change this? Why is it like this? Who is affected?

7 Key inquiry questions for this unit:
How and why are places similar and different? What would it be like to live in a neighbouring country? What information do you need to know? What questions will you need to answer? What skills do you need?
