2 State Government Powers
Delegated powers- powers held by the federal government Can you provide examples of delegated powers? Conducting foreign policy, printing money, maintaining a post office, and defending the country

3 Powers Reserved to the States
Reserved Powers- the Tenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution says any power not delegated to the federal government belongs to the people and the states Allows state gov. to establish rules for health, safety, and welfare of its citizens State powers include: Marriage laws Driving laws Traffic regulations Education systems Conduct elections What powers are granted to state governments? set rules for health, safety, and welfare of citizens in the state; set rules concerning marriage, driving, and traffic regulations, establish schools, conduct elections

4 Concurrent Powers Concurrent powers- powers held by both federal and state governments Concurrent powers include: Taxation Making/enforcing laws Borrow and spending money

5 State Constitutions All 50 states have their own constitution
Many include the following elements: A preamble A bill of rights An outline of the state’s gov. Election guidelines Ways to manage state affairs Ways to amend the constitution

6 States Work Together States agree to work together in the Constitution
Full faith and credit clause- part of the Constitution that ensures each state will accept the decisions of civil courts in other states Ex: Florida will accept the wills, birth certificates, etc. issued in Texas Extradition- method of returning fugitives to the state where they committed a crime States also cooperate on: Building bridges that connect states Reducing regional water and air pollution What are some ways that state governments cooperate with one another? By accepting the decisions of civil courts in other states, returning fugitives through extradition, working together to reduce air and water pollution, and to build bridges that connect states

7 States Work with the Federal Government
Share cost of services Ex: build highways, assist the unemployed, conserve natural resources, provide aid to victims of natural disasters Do you agree that both the states and the federal government should be responsible for building highways? Why or why not? Yes because highways connect the entire country Why do states cooperate with each other and the federal government? Working together makes some projects that benefit people in many states more affordable
