1 I. Background of Civil War Background of soldier During the Civil War soldiers, like Ted Smith, not only had to survive from being shot in battle, but they also had to survive the camp life. II. The Wounded When the Civil War concluded in 1865, 150,000 soldiers had died from being wounded because of poor procedures in handling the wounded. A. Helping the wounded As fighting continued, two out of every five soldiers died on the battlefield waiting to be brought to the hospital. Once the soldiers got to the field hospitals they were operated on under poor sanitary conditions because the doctors did not sterilize their hands or instruments. 1. 2 out 5 died waiting 2. Poor sanitary operating conditions The doctors elected for the quick operating procedure of amputation of the limbs. Once the soldiers survived the operation, they were not out of the woods yet; for next, they had to survive the infection. 3.
