1 Drawing Atoms Rutherford Bohr

2 Introducing Bohr Diagrams
What do we know about atomic theory? Neutrons and protons are in the nucleus Electrons are in different energy shells around the nucleus From this we can construct Bohr diagrams to depict what an atom looks like N P 2e 8e Neutrons protons electrons Electrons in the outermost shell are called valence electrons.

3 Bohr diagrams show how many electrons appear in each electron shell around an atom.
Hydrogen: simplest atomic structure, atomic number 1 e P (All other atoms contain protons and neutrons in their nucleus) Carbon: atomic number 6 N P e Electrons in the outermost shell are called valence electrons.

4 Practice drawing Bohr diagrams
Draw the Bohr diagram for an atom with atomic number 3, Li, Lithium 7p 7n Draw the Bohr diagram for an atom with atomic number 7, Ni, Nitrogen 11p 11n Draw the Bohr diagram for an atom with atomic number 11, Na, Sodium How many valence electrons does each have?

5 Problems to Try Silver has an atomic number of 47 how many protons?
how many neutrons? how many electrons? what is the nuclear charge for this atom? Why does silver have so many neutrons?

6 Try the Problems on your Bohr Model Diagram Worksheet
