1 Drawing Bohr Models and Lewis Dot Structures

2 Bohring

3 Bohr Models Used to predict reactivity in elements
Reactivity - how likely an element is to form a compound with another element, based on valence electrons

4 Drawing Bohr Models Draw the nucleus.

5 Drawing Bohr Models Draw the nucleus.
Write the number of Protons and Neutrons in the nucleus P:9 N:10

6 Drawing Bohr Models Draw the first shell P:9 N:10

7 Drawing Bohr Models Draw the first shell
Add the electrons, the first shell can only hold 2 P:9 N:10

8 Drawing Bohr Models Draw the next shell if you
have more electrons to add P:9 N:10

9 Drawing Bohr Models Add your electrons, the 2nd shell can hold up to 8
Be sure to add them one at a time going clock wise. P:9 N:10

10 Rules for Energy Levels
Keep adding shells until you use up all of your electrons. Here is how many each shell holds: Shell 1: 2 Shell 2: 8 Shell 3: 18 Shell 4: 32

11 Guided Practice It is easiest to figure out your protons, neutrons and electrons and then draw. 6 6 6 6 C Carbon 12.011 Protons: _____ Neutrons: _____ Electrons: ______ How many energy shells will this have? ____ How many valence (outer) electrons does this element have? ____ Bohr Model: 2 4

17 Drawing Lewis Dot Structures
Lewis Dot Structures are easier, all you need are the number of valence electrons. Fluorine has 7 valence electrons

18 Drawing Lewis Dot Structures
Write the letter(s) for the element to represent the nucleus. Draw the valence electrons around the letter. Two electrons will fit around each side for a total of 8. Draw four all the way around the letter before drawing a second one. F

19 Drawing Lewis Dot Structures
DONE!! Add the valence electrons in the same way as Bohr models, go clockwise F

20 Guided Practice 6 Number of Valence Electrons: _____

21 Guided Practice 5 Number of Valence Electrons: _____

22 Guided Practice 1 Number of Valence Electrons: _____
