2 Global atmospheric circulation
Red - To be able to define what atmospheric circulation is and describe surface wind and pressure belt patterns. Amber - To be able to explain how the atmospheric circulation model drives the world’s weather. Green - To be able to compare different weather and climate patterns in different global regions and explain their variation due to global atmospheric circulation.

3 Starter - Context In pairs, think about:
Where would you have rather been yesterday? What causes 3 different places to have entirely different temperatures and weather on the same day?

4 3 Global atmospheric circulation - Core basics Global - The earth
Atmosphere - The air above our heads - mass of swirling gases, liquids and solids such as carbon dioxide and oxygen, water vapour and droplets and ash. Circulation - Circular air movements called cells. These cells all join together to form the overall circulation of the earths atmosphere. Task (All) - Write your own definition for ‘Global atmospheric circulation’ in no more than 20 words. 3

5 High pressure = Air that is sinking towards the ground
The Earth's atmosphere exerts a pressure on the surface. Pressure is measured in hectoPascals (hPa), also called millibars. High pressure = Air that is sinking towards the ground Low pressure = Air that is rising from the grounds surface
