1 What controls traits? Chapter 5 Lesson 2

2 Alleles Genes Chromosomes
Allele- the different forms of a gene Gene- section of a chromosome that has genetic information for one trait. Chromosomes- your chromosomes exist as pairs, one from each parent.

3 Phenotype- how a trait appears or shows
Phenotype- how a trait appears or shows. What are some phenotypes from the picture? Genotype- two alleles that control the phenotype of a trait. What can we infer about the genotype of the cat if white fur is dominant?

4 Possible symbols for Cat’s Genotype
WW Ww

5 Symbols cont. Homozygous- when two alleles of a gene are the same, its genotype. Heterozygous- if the two alleles of a gene are different. Label the following as homozygous or heterozygous WW Ww ww

6 Guided Practice Label each as genotype or phenotype
black BB polkadot red gg Gg

7 Label each of the following as homozygous or heterozygous
TT Bb bb Hh HH nn

8 If purple (P) is dominant to white (p) tell whether each of the following is purple or white and homozygous or heterozygous. PP Pp pp
