1 Air Under Water Part 2

2 Daily Objective Air is matter. Air takes up space.
Air can be captured.

3 Vocabulary Vial - A small container often used for liquids or pills
Bubble - A pocket of air that forms when a gas rises to the surface of a liquid Water - A clear liquid made of hydrogen and oxygen Paper Towel - A soft, absorbent towel made of paper that can be thrown away or recycled after use Submerge - To put under water

4 Introduction Today we are going to find out more about air by using the vials, the basins of water, a plastic foam ball, and a paper towel.

5 Observations and Discussions
First we will start with the vial, plastic foam ball, and basin of water. Is there air in the vial? How do you know? If you push the vial straight down into the water, is the air still in the vial? How do you know? How did it feel when you pushed the vial into the water upside down? Where do the bubbles come from?

6 Observation and Discussion
Now lets see if you can submerge your vial and still keep the paper towel dry. What did you do to keep the paper towel dry? Why do you think that worked?

7 Vocabulary Review Vial - A small container often used for liquids or pills Bubble - A pocket of air that forms when a gas rises to the surface of a liquid Water - A clear liquid made of hydrogen and oxygen Paper Towel - A soft, absorbent towel made of paper that can be thrown away or recycled after use Submerge - To put under water

8 What We Learned Air can be __________ in a vial underwater.
Air __________ come out of the vial if it’s tipped sideways. Air takes up __________, so water can not get in and get the towel wet. trapped bubbles space
