When writing, every essay or paragraph should have a sentence that states your main idea/argument/what you will be talking about.
In a paragraph this sentence is called a topic sentence.
In an essay, this sentence is called a thesis statement.
Copy: Topic +Inference=Thesis statement/Topic Sentence.
When you create a topic sentence/thesis statement, you MUST support it with evidence.
If you are responding to a text, your evidence must come from the text.
You can put your text evidence into quotations if you are copying word for word, or paraphrase your evidence in your own word.

In saving Joanna's life, Mr. Behrman gave up his own. Was Mr. Behrman a hero—or was he foolish? Explain your answer.
In giving up his life to save Joanna, Mr. Behrman was a hero. For example, the story says, “his shoes and clothing was drenched with rain” because he went out into the cold night to paint. It takes a truly brave person to risk their life to paint in the cold wet night. Also, because he was an elderly man he faced an even higher risk of catching pneumonia by painting in the cold wet night.
Notice how I use transition words to connect my thoughts? When giving an example be sure to use the transition word “for example” or “for instance” when you want to add on to your example, use the transition word “also”
By painting the leaf on the wall, Mr. Behrman gave Joanna a new reason to live. For instance, when Joanna saw the leaf still clinging to its stem, she realized it “was a sin to want to die.” By saving Joanna’s life and teaching her a valuable lesson, Mr. Behrman is definitely a hero.
I use quotation marks when I am taking evidence exactly as it appears in the text.
Everything else is paraphrased/put into my own words.

2) As a result of Mr. Behrman saving her life, predict how Joanna will change. Use evidence from the text to support your answer.
3) Why did Mr. Behrman choose to help Joanna in the story?
