1 The Trail of Tears

2 Problem: Natives and Settlers had long been fighting with each other in the Southeast. American settlers wanted and thought they should have native lands to grow crops. Natives did not want to farm or give up the land.

3 Cultural Assimilation
The process in which a culture changes to resemble the culture of another group. To solve this problem, Natives were encouraged to assimilate to European culture.

5 Indian Removal 125,000 natives living in the South.
Natives began being pushed out of the south for their land. (1830)President Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act and began forced relocation of natives. Native tribes were slowly removed from their homes and sent to Oklahoma.

6 Trail of Tears 1838 – 16,000 Cherokee were forced by soldiers to march West without time to gather their belongings. 4,000 died along the way. By 1837, Jackson had removed 46,000 natives.
