1 7.3 volcanic eruptions What happens when a volcano erupts? What are the two types of volcanic eruptions? What are a volcano’s stages of activity? Key terms: magma chamber, pipe, vent, lava flow, crater, pyroclastic flow, dormant, extinct

2 Magma reaches the surface
Inside a volcano – pocket of magma beneath the surface and one or more cracks. Beneath a volcano – magma chamber collects magma. Magma moves up through a pipe – a long tube in the ground that connects the magma chamber to the surface.

3 Molten rock and gas leave the volcano through an opening called a vent
Molten rock and gas leave the volcano through an opening called a vent. Often, there is one central vent. Some have vents on the sides of the volcanoes. A lava flow is the area covered by lava as it pours out of a vent. A crater is a bowl shaped area that may form at the top of a volcano around the central vent.

4 Volcanic eruptions What pushes magma to the surface?
Dissolved gases are trapped inside magma. The gases are under pressure. As magma rises toward the surface, the pressure of the surrounding rock on the magma decreases. The dissolved gases begin to expand, forming bubbles. Pressure falls within the magma, gas bubble size increases – creates an enormous force

5 When a volcano erupts, the force of the expanding gases pushes magma from the magma chamber through the pipe until it flows out the vent

6 Kinds of eruptions Quiet or explosive
Quiet – magma is low in silica. Low viscosity and flows easily. Bubbles out. Produces both pahoehoe and aa. Explosive – high in silica. High viscosity. Does not flow easily, so it builds up then blows out. Produces pumice and obsidian. Produces volcanic ash and cinders. Pyroclastic flow – occurs when explosive eruption hurls out a mixture of hot gases, ash, cinders, and bombs (larger pieces of junk flying from a volcano)

7 Volcano hazards Quiet eruptions – lava comes from vents, sets fires
Explosive – clouds of deadly gases and ash. Wet ash can cause roofs to collapse.

8 Stages of activity Life cycle of a volcano Dormant – sleeping –
Active – duhh Extinct – dead, unlikely to erupt again

9 Monitoring volcanoes Easier to predict than earthquakes
Detect changes in and around volcanoes Tiltmeters and other instruments Monitor gases escaping Temperature increases underground
