1 Kinetic Theory of Gasses

2 Vocabulary: Pressure: the force of a gas on the wall of a container.
Volume: the amount of space occupied by matter.

3 Gasses Gasses have unique properties compared to solids and liquids.
Kinetic Theory is the explanation of the properties and behavior of gasses

4 Kinetic Theory Gasses are made of very small molecules.
Gas molecules are located very far apart so most of the volume of the gas is empty space.

5 Kinetic Theory Gas molecules do not attract or repel each other.
Gas molecules are always moving. They bump into each other and the walls of the container.

6 Kinetic Theory Temperature determines the kinetic energy of gas molecules. Temperature of gasses is measured in Kelvins. To convert from Celsius to Kelvin – add 273 to the temperature in Celsius 35˚C is = 308K

7 Ideal Gas An Ideal Gas is a gas that perfectly obeys kinetic theory in all conditions. Most gasses are ideal in normal temperatures and pressure. Most do not act as ideal gasses in low temperatures and high pressures. Hydrogen and helium are closest to ideal gases.
