James Monroe was President Madison’s Secretary of State during the War of 1812.
By states had signed a petition urging Monroe to run for president.

3. Monroe Era Begins Monroe was hesitant but agreed with 2 conditions.
No political party.
No active campaign.

Election of 1816 Begins.

5. Winning the Election
While his opponent Rufus King toured the country making speeches, Monroe remained in Washington running the state department.
“If they want me they will vote for me if I don’t make a single speech…”

6. Winning the Election
Voters sensed his sincerity, and he won he election in a landslide.
While major political parties did not clash nationally during the “Era of Good Feelings” rivalries still existed on the state level.

Voter turnout was small because the people had little influence on choose candidates.
Most candidates were picked by a party caucus.
For president, they usually nominated the incumbent.

If he had already served two terms, they selected the Secretary of State.
Secretary of State was seen as the stepping stone to the presidency.

Monroe was the 4th President to come from the state of Virginia.
He did not give an inaugural address.
“I will do my best.”
Monroe was basically a Democratic- Republican but he also liked ideas of the Federalist party.
He wanted to hear different ideas to come up with solutions for the country.

10. Monroe in Charge Monroe wanted the best people working in his cabinet.
He didn’t care about political party affiliation.
He angered many Democratic- Republicans when he chose John Quincy Adams, who would later run against him (1820) as Secretary of State.
