3. Unit 2 Activator
1) Start with your handout. For each word, write down whatever words come to your mind, whatever thoughts you associate with the word.

1) Record on the poster one word or thought you put on your handout.
2) Respond to someone else’s word or thought.
You MUST do this silently. Communicate only with writing, not with speaking.

What did you notice about the words we use to describe different groups of people?
Are they true or not true?
Do we all have enough personal experience to say that they are 100% true?
What is it called when we say something about a group of people that may or may not be true?

6. Unit 2 Vocabulary Notes
Stereotype: a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing.
Assumption: a thing that is accepted as true or as certain to happen, without proof.
Discrimination: the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex.
Judgment: an opinion or decision that is based on careful thought.

7. Quick Writes
How do the stereotypes recorded by the class make you feel?
What do you notice about the stereotypes YOU listed? Were they mostly positive or negative? Did you have many stereotypes for different groups, or the same stereotypes for different groups?
Where have you seen these stereotypes portrayed? television programs, movies, magazines, books?
How do you think a stereotype might cause someone to act unfairly toward another person?
