3 “The Ballad of the Landlord”
TP-CASTT “The Ballad of the Landlord” by Langston Hughes Title— make a prediction Paraphrase— put it into your own words Connotation— what “tricks” does the poet use? Attitude (tone)— what is the diction of the poem? Shifts— where does the poem change? Title— revisit the title (how close were you?) Theme—

4 THEME What does the poem say about the human experience, motivation, or condition? What subject does the poem address? What do we learn about that subject? What idea does the poet want us to take away from the poem?

5 “The Tale of the Tenant”
1. Write the “The Tale of the Tenant,” a poem coming from the perspective of the landlord. Your writing will be evaluated based on accurate reflection of central ideas, attitudes, and themes, as well as on the appropriate use of organizational structure. For example, an effectively written poem will have clear stanza structure, most likely will include a SHIFT, and will use some level of CONNOTATION (figurative language, specific diction, and have a distinct rhythm).

6 “The Tale of the Tenant”
2. Create a dialogue between the landlord and his wife, discussing the events of the original poem. Your writing will be evaluated based on accurate reflection of central ideas, attitudes and themes, as well as on the appropriate use of organizational structure. Students must name both the landlord and the landlord’s wife. The structure of the dialogue should be in one of two distinct formats: a dialogue such as those that occur in plays, or dialogue that occurs in short stories.
