Verbal Irony When words state the opposite of the writer’s meaning Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare “Two households both act alike in dignity” The author makes it seem as if the households are respectful towards one another when we come to find out that they are really competitive enemies

Situational Irony When events turn out the opposite of what was expected The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne Hester Prynne was given the choice to leave town once she had committed her sin, however she decides to stay and face the consequences

6 Dramatic Irony When facts or events are unknown to a character but known to the audience Shrek Shrek, an ogre, was given a mission to save a princess. He has the mindset that the two were from different worlds. The audience learns of the princess’ true identity as an ogre before Shrek himself.
