1 1 step: Mol to mass conversions
Unit 9: The Mole 1 step: Mol to mass conversions

2 What is the mass in mol to mass conversions?
The mass comes from the molar mass of the element or compound. The mass of the substance is equal to 1 mole of that substance.

3 What is a mole? How many are in a pair? Dozen? Gross? Ream?
What do these represent? A specific numerical value.

4 What is a mole? What is a mole? A mole is simply a unit of measure.
1 mole of a substance = the molar mass of the substance 1 mole of a substance = 6.02 x 1023 particles of that substance What is a mole?

5 Mass and the Mole: AMU: (atomic mass unit) is the mass of one nucleon (proton and neutron) Carbon’s AMU: 12g (12 protons and neutrons) How the mole came to be was calculated an isotope of Carbon-12. 1 mol = a substance’s AMU 1 mol of Carbon has an AMU of 12 grams. 1 mole of Carbon = 12 grams (why molar mass is g/mol – it is how many grams are in 1 mol) AMU is for an individual atom of an element Molar mass is all the AMU’s in a substance 1 Mole is 6.02 x 1023 particles and the molar mass of a substance: There are 6.02 x 1023 particles (atoms, formula units, molecules) of a substance in 1 mole of that substance There are 6.02 x 1023 particles in the molar mass of a substance. Every mole has a different mass value based on their AMU, because each atom has a different mass.

6 How to do 1 step mass to mol conversions:
1. find the molar mass of the substance… You will need this to complete the problem. 2. Solve using dimensional analysis. Remember identical units must be opposite of each other, so they can be cross cancelled. How many moles in 56.71g of water (H2O)? 56.71g H2O 1 mol H2O = x 1 = mols H2O 18g H2O *Remember the molar mass of H2O is 18g/mol. (2 hydrogen atoms x 1 AMU + 1 oxygen atom x 16 AMU) = 18 g/mol

7 PRACTICE PROBLEMS
