6 Do Now Copy the sentences below and underline the complete subject once and underline the complete predicate twice. The stern judge ruled that the defendant was not guilty. From Texas comes the Star Ruby grapefruit.

8 Topic Sentences Usually the first sentence of a paragraph, summarizes the content of the paragraph, telling the reader what to expect. Must be a summary of the main idea of the paragraph. Should not address the reader directly, telling the reader what the writer is about to do.

9 Topic Sentences Must cover only one main idea.
Must be a general statement that is provable with explanations and examples. Must be about your own ideas, written in your own words, not a quotation or a paraphrase of someone else's ideas. Example: Getting rid of racism in this country must become a priority of our government.

10 Thesis Statement Should be as clear and specific as possible.
Should do more than merely announce the topic. Must reveal what position you will take in relation to that topic. (Remember, you want to save your life as an Endangered Animal).

11 Thesis Statement Your thesis statement must incorporate your topic, 3 main points about your topic, and your opinion. Example: The American government should do its part to alleviate racism, poverty, and improve the education system.
