After Germany restarted unrestricted submarine warfare coupled with Zimmerman telegram to seek alliance with Mexico

G now desperate so launched huge gamble to break through W Front before US troops arrive

Allies counter-attack on much of the W Front by Oct the Gs were in full retreat

Mutinies, riots and chaos in G. Many believed Kaiser Wilhelm II was standing in the way of peace, so forced to abdicate. G became a republic.
