1 Ancient India Vocabulary Terms

2 Terms 1-4 Subcontinent: a large land area that is topographically separate but still a part of the larger continent. Citadel: a fortress-city center in the Indus River Valley. Aryan: one of a group of semi-nomadic people that originally came from eastern Europe and spoke a Indo-European language. Caste: a division within India's class system.

3 Terms 5-8 Vedas: a collection of sacred hymns and poems. Raja: a ruler of Ancient India. Varnas: social classes of Ancient India. Buddhism: a religion founded in India by Siddhartha Gautama; stresses moderation and nonviolence.

4 Terms 9-12 Reincarnation: rebirth of a soul in another living thing. Karma: the thoughts, speech and actions a person performs during a lifetime. Hinduism: the major religion and way of life in modern India. Guild: an association of artisans or merchants who do the same work.
