identify the main idea of the passage
look up unfamiliar words. If a word has multiple meanings, determine the meaning appropriate to the passage.

Replace unfamiliar, difficult, or outdated words with familiar words.
Simplify the sentence structure.
Maintain the tone or mood of the text.
Include all the major ideas and any important details.
