Victorian Literature Victorian literature of the early 1900s was constrained and polite Victorian literature also focused on loss and what remains after a loss Also focused on moralistic view of society (danced around topics like sexuality, for example)

Catalysts for Change Horrors of war: Trench warfare Gas poisoning Troops with severe casualties Cities destroyed Psychological damage Migration from country to cities and the poverty associated with cities Disillusionment about values (racism) Advancements in thinking (esp. psychology – Freud and technology)

What did it teach us? Human life is fragile Violent, horrible loss often happens with no warning Plans can’t protect us from disaster

5 Modernist Beliefs There is no God, no universal plan, no real rules for living life The world is unfair and full of suffering Human life is too complicated; we can’t hope to understand each other Language is ineffective at helping us connect to each other Men and women must struggle to survive as individuals

6 Characteristics of Modern Novels
Stream of consciousness internal world of feelings; all people have a unique world view Most told in first person Description of city life creation and new ideas, but overcrowding, poverty, and crime as well Isolation, even in a crowd Characters On a quest to reinvent themselves Trying to live meaningfully in a world that doesn’t have morality, rationale, and value Loose references to time Chronological time is vague, confusing Exact events might not be recalled

American dream is corrupt, unattainable Things like religion and patriotism lose their meaning World is too hostile to allow us to achieve our dreams

8 Gatsby as a modernist text?
Characters (wealth, social class, industry) Jay Gatsby – modernist hero? World of wealth – Gatsby wants to enter it, but how is he disillusioned? Gatsby’s dream vs. reality? Rifts between classes – old money vs. new money; rich vs. poor; East vs. West; innocence vs. experience? American dream – is it real? War – what happens to Gatsby after it? How does Gatsby get his $$?
