1 Do Now: What does it mean for something to be a vector and scalar?
A rocket is launched at a 45o angle North of East with an acceleration of 7 (m/s)/s. What are the rocket’s vector components?

2 Aim: How do we solve average speed and velocity?
HW: Average Speed and Velocity WS

3 Moving Stuff If we move this box 5 meters, is it a vector or scalar? 5 meters

4 How can we describe the speed/velocity of an object?
The rate at which an object moves How far an object moves in a certain amount of time.

5 How can determine the velocity of an object?
Speed- Distance/Time Velocity- Displacement/Time Velocity has magnitude and direction, so it’s a vector. Speed only has Magnitude.

6 The race car traveled 1 kilometers East in 1.67 minutes
Determine the Velocity of the car below. Show Work V = d/t V = 10.0 m/s V = 1000m/100s The race car traveled 1 kilometers East in 1.67 minutes

7 Bowling for Speed Activity
Directions: We’re going to bowl for speed! On the ground is tape stretching 5 meters. Lets record how long it takes to roll the ball that distance! Determine the bowling ball’s speed! Show Work

8 How can a Graph tell us where and when?
Bowling Position vs. Time Time (seconds) Position (m) 5 10 30 ***What would the graph look like if we rolled the basketball backwards in opposite direction? What does the slope of this graph tell us? VELOCITY

9 Activity – Graphing Position vs. Time
Read the information at each station and answer the questions that follow. Be sure to show your work and explain.

10 Position vs. Time Graph for a hockey puck gliding over ice
What is the puck’s position at 3 seconds? What is the puck’s average velocity from 0s-7s? Why is the puck’s velocity constant?

11 Position vs. Time Table for a Car
Time (sec) Position (m) 1.0 5.0 2.0 10.0 3.0 15.0 4.0 20.0 Sketch a Position vs. Time Graph for the data. Calculate the average velocity in (m/s) using the slope and write the equation of the line.

12 Two People in Motion How long had Juanita been walking when Heather started? Will Heather catch up? How can you tell?

13 Different Forms of Position vs. Time Graphs
From A-B I don’t move and stay at 20m. From B-C I move 40 m away at a constant velocity. From C-D I don’t move and stay at 60m. From D-E I move back to my original position of 20 meters. (Negative Velocity) Riding my ATV C D A B E Demo with tape measure. Position a student between start and end and run through exact graph motion.

14 Exit Card Use your knowledge of velocity and graphing to answer the questions on your exit card. Be sure to hand in your exit card when it is complete.

15 Describe what is happening between each set of lines.
What is the average velocity from A-B? What is the average velocity from C-D? Jogger’s Motion B C A D
