4 GOVERNMENT Government is a system by which a group of people make laws which guide a community. Why do we need Government? 1. Safety and Order 2. Everyone understands their “role” 3. Everyone is provided for NOT SURE??? Let’s experiment with the Shipwreck Scenario …

5 THE SHIPWRECK SCENARIO
Your group has been shipwrecked on a remote island You must figure out a way to generate food, water, shelter, and protection. How will the group share necessities? Who will perform tasks? Create at least 5 rules.

7 3 TYPES of GOVERNMENT There are 3 main types of Government
In the middle column, predict how each type of government works Authoritarian One main leader “Top Down” rule Democracy Majority Rules voting system Consensus Every single member of gov. has to agree on new policies

8 AUTHORITARIAN Government
Little or no input from “the people” Often called a “dictatorship” May rely on military, informers and secret police to eliminate opposition May control media to build support PROS CONS

9 DEMOCRATIC Government
Decisions made based on the will of the people Citizens choose individuals in elections to represent them in government Opposition is tolerated PROS CONS

10 CONSENSUS Government Issues are discussed among the people until everyone agrees to accept a resolution An “egalitarian” government (equality among the people) Common among Aboriginal groups before European Contact PROS CONS

11 Government at School 1. Describe a specific experience that you have had at school, that has been very authoritarian in nature. 2. Do the same for a democratic experience. 3. Now describe a consensus oriented experience.
