1 Bell Ringer What is an ionic bond? What is a covalent bond?
Show the ionic bonding between: Sodium and Chlorine Show the covalent bonding between: Carbon and Oxygen

2 Nomenclature Day 1 Naming Ionic Compounds Type I and Type II

3 Review- What is an ionic compound?
Ionic compound: bond that forms between metal and nonmetal elements. Metals= always listed 1st in the compound; known as the “cation” because it forms a positive charge when it loses an electron Nonmetals= always listed in 2nd in the compound; known as the “anion” because it forms a negative charge when it gains an electron Ex: LiOH, KCl, LiF, etc

4 The “Rules” for Naming Ionic Compounds: Type 1
The cation is named first as it appears in the periodic table The anion is named second with the root word + the suffix “ide” Example: KBr K is the ____________. Br is the ____________. Based off our rules we would name this as: Potassium Bromide

5 KI  that is an I for Iodine BeO
Table Group Practice LiF MgS NaCl CaS KCl KI  that is an I for Iodine BeO

6 Ionic Compounds Type II (Transition Metals)
Rules: Same rules as Type I Ionic Compounds Plus: Roman numerals represent the CHARGE for the CATION Ex: Fe2O3 means Fe 3+ and O 2- (charges switch in the compound) Answer: Iron (III) Oxide remember transitional metals are located in the middle of the periodic table

7 Do these with group: CuCl2 MnF3 FeCl3 CoBr3 PbI2
SnO This one is tricky; just because there is not a roman numeral listed after Oxygen doesn’t mean you don’t need a roman numeral

8 The Criss-Cross and SOCCER Method
- An alternative way to find the chemical formulas (easier way) is to use the criss-cross rule Using the example CaI, the compound formed by calcium and iodine: STEP 1: write the ionic charges above the symbols. STEP 2: criss-cross the numbers using them as subscripts. SOCCER (Symbol , Oxidation No., Criss, Cross, Evaluate , Reduce )
