Order of Operations BEDMAS

Why does it matter? If there was no priority given to operations in mathematics, then different people would get different answers to different questions. This is why we do different operations in a particular order.

What is the order? If there are Brackets present, everything inside them is done first. If there are powers (or Exponents) these are done next. Division and Multiplication are equally ranked and done next from left to right. All that should be left is Addition and Subtraction which are equally ranked and done last from left to right.

Example Find the value of 3 2 − 4−1 ×2+8÷2 Brackets first so look at the (4−1) to get 3 Then exponents so 3 2 =9 The expression becomes 9−3×2+8÷2

Example Find the value of 3 2 − 4−1 ×2+8÷2 From the previous slide 9−3×2+8÷2 Multiplication and division next from left to right 3×2=6 8÷2=4 So now the expression is 9−6+4 Done left to right it gives 7 So 3 2 − 4−1 ×2+8÷2=7
