1 Order of Operations 1

2 Simplify the expression using the proper order of operations. (P, E, MD, AS) There are no operations inside the parenthesis so now evaluate the exponents Now perform any multiplication or division [left to right] And finally, perform any addition or subtraction [left to right] 2

3 Common Errors Errors occur frequently with order of operations but most can be avoided by doing the work one step at a time until you are and expert. There is one key point in order of operations that is often misunderstood.  Addition and subtraction (just like multiplication and division) are partners, you perform these operations from left to right. 10 - 5 + 2 Using addition and THEN subtraction Going from left to right10 – 5 + 2 10 – 75 + 2 3737 3

4 Common Errors Confusion can occur when we learn an advanced skill and it conflicts with our understanding of more basic idea or method. Order of operations tell us to perform addition from left to right: 10 – 6 + 3 becomes 4 + 3 or 7. It would be incorrect to add 6 and 3 first: 10 – 6 + 3 becomes 10 – 9 which is equal to 1. However, since we learned integer rules it is possible to combine -6 and 3: 10 – 6 + 3 becomes 10 – 3 which is equal to 7. 4
