1 Mathematics Order of Operations

2 Contest Quiz… You have just won a new bicycle, but the contest requires you to answer a skill testing question…

3 Skill-testing question
3 + 3 x 2 ÷ 3 = ? How many found 4 as the answer? How many found another answer? What is it? Why?

4 Skill-testing question
3 + 3 x 2 ÷ 3 = In fact, the answer is 5!!! Huh??!!

5 Try another… How / why could 7 - 3 x 2 + 3 be equal to 4?

6 Order of Operations The “Order of Operations” is a
set of mathematical rules… They are used to decide which operations in an number sentence or expression MUST be done first to simplify the expression…

7 Order of Operations What are these rules? How can we remember them?
We can use the acronym “BEDMAS” to remember the order for each operation in an expression.

“BEDMAS” B rackets E xponents D ivision M ultiplication A ddition S ubtraction Together in order in which they occur Together in order in which they occur

9 BEDMAS Note: Multiplication and Division are
applied together in the order in which they appear. Addition and Subtraction are applied together in the order in which they appear.

10 B E D M A S So... 3 x ÷ 3 = ÷ 3 = 9 + 2 = 11

11 B E D M A S Try this... x 3 ÷ 5

12 Try these: 12 – 6 ÷ 3 (12 – 6) ÷ 3 2 x 3 + 12 ÷ 3 2 x 6 - 23
BEDMAS Try these: 12 – 6 ÷ 3 (12 – 6) ÷ 3 2 x ÷ 3 2 x

13 BEDMAS 12 – 6 ÷ 3

14 BEDMAS (12 – 6) ÷ 3

15 BEDMAS 2 x ÷ 3

16 BEDMAS 2 x
