6 FDR: Polio 1921: Contracted polio, which eventually paralyzed him from the waist down Polio is a viral infectious disease that can affect nerves and can lead to partial or full paralysis FDR refuses to accept paralysis and seeks numerous treatments and therapies while working hard to hide the extent of his medical condition Purchases a resort in Warm Springs, GA Founded the March of Dimes Only two known photos in a wheelchair

10 FDR: Marriage to Eleanor
1905: Marries Eleanor FDR’s mother vehemently against the marriage Teddy stood in for Eleanor’s deceased father at wedding Very different personalities FDR outgoing, charismatic, great campaigner, active Eleanor shy, not social, viewed sex as “an ordeal to be endured” Six children together (one died in infancy)

11 FDR: Lucy Mercer Had affairs outside of his marriage, most infamously with Eleanor’s secretary Lucy Mercer Eleanor found love letters & offered divorce, but FDR’s mother refused to allow it, FDR didn’t want to hurt his political career, and Lucy (a Catholic) refused to marry a divorced man with five kids; FDR promises not to see Lucy again (but he does) Lucy gets married but still “meets” w/FDR throughout his presidency FDR’s daughter Anna helps arrange meetings Lucy was with FDR when he dies

12 FDR: Death March 1945: FDR goes to “Little White House” in Warm Springs to rest before going to United Nations April 12, 1945: Says “I have a terrific pain in the back of my head” and loses consciousness, officially declared dead within a couple hours Suffered massive cerebral hemorrhage Was 63-years-old
