1 Measurement Big Idea:  Scientists world wide use SI measurements, prefixes indicate larger or smaller numbers and conversion factors.

2 Measurement Some discoveries in science happened by pure luck, but most discoveries came through careful planning. The scientific method is a logical approach to solving problems and collecting data, formulating and testing hypotheses, and formulating theories that are supported by data

3 Measurements Observations include making measurements and collecting data.  Which is done in two ways. The data may be qualitative (descriptive).  An example is the color of copper metal. The data may be quantitative (numerical).  An example is the copper metal has a mass of g.

4 Measurement Could you use the following recipe to make a muffins?
Combine muffin mix, 1/3 milk, 1 vegetable oil and 1 egg. What would you need to know? A quantity is something that has magnitude, size, or amount. A quantity is not the same as a measurement.

5 Measurement What is the metric system (SI system)?

6 Measurement Scientists world wide use SI measurement
Scientists all over the world have agreed on a single measurement system called Le Systeme international d’Unites or SI. It has 7 base units and prefixes are used to represent quantities that are larger or smaller than the base units.

7 Measurement YOU WILL NEED TO KNOW THESE FIVE BASE SI UNITS FOR CHEMISTRY. Quantity Quantity Symbol Unit name Unit abbreviation length l meter m mass kilogram/gram kg/g time t second s temperature T kelvin K amount of substance n mole mol

8 Measurement Conversion factors
Express a mass of g in milligrams and kilograms.

9 Measurement You could use the following to help in converting one unit to another. 103 102 101 100 10-1 10-2 10-3 kilo hecto deka Base Unit deci centi milli king harry drools ugly dark chocolate milk Do examples on the board

10 Formative Assessment Label each of the following measurements by the quantity each represents. 5.0 g/ml 37 s 39.56 g 25.3 cm3 30.23 ml 2.7 mg
