2 Faith and Architecture
Medieval Cities: tallest buildings were cathedrals/churches. This symbolized importance of the church. They celebrate the glory of god. First English Cathedral was built at Canterbury PITTSBURGH: What are our tallest or biggest structures? What do they represent?

3 Christianizing England
Pope sent missionaries to England in 596, By 650 most of England Christian. After Christianity, emergence of education and culture from the church. By 8th Century, Anglo-Saxon culture at a peak, books reflect religious life, called Manuscripts.

4 Monasteries Monks: men who dedicate their lives to the church.
Nuns: women who dedicate their lives to the church. Monasteries: Places where people could live and dedicate their lives to the church, with communal living. Monks established libraries and schools in their monasteries. They values the written word.

5 Pilgrimages To show religious devotion, people undertook a pilgrimage.
Pilgrimage: Journey to a religious place. Rich people would travel to Jerusalem or Rome. Most people were poor and went on pilgrimages to local religious shrines, such as Canterbury Cathedral.

6 Religious Drama Few could read: church sermons and stained glass windows were important. English drama emerged from people acting out religious stories from the bible. These “plays” eventually moved from the church to the town square. Eventually regular people, instead of religious people, would act out the parts,.
