William Howard Taft Handpicked by Teddy Roosevelt for president
Teddy and Taft were good friends Taft can’t control Congress like Teddy did. Vows to continue progressive reforms but doesn’t appoint a Progressive to his cabinet. Signs the Payne-Aldrich Tariff that lowers tariffs on imported seaweed and birdseed.

William Howard Taft Ballinger-Pinchot Affair
-Gifford Pinchot is head of the US Forest Service -Richard Ballinger is Secretary of the Interior opposes conservation of federal lands. -Ballinger leases federal lands with coal in Alaska to business friends. -Pinchot objects so Taft fires him.

Teddy Roosevelt the Progressive
1910-returns home from a two year safari in Africa. Campaigns for Progressive candidates in midterm elections. Comes up with a new plan called New Nationalism.

Teddy Roosevelt the Progressive
Challenged Taft for the Republican nomination for president in 1912 and lost. Progressive Republicans are angry and start their own political party which nominates Teddy Roosevelt. This splits the Republican Party. The Bull Moose becomes the Progressive Party’s symbol.

Teddy Roosevelt the Progressive
Shot while giving a speech, but continues for another one and a half hours. Mudslings with Taft while Wilson stays out of it and lets them destroy each other.

Taft’s Record Broke more trusts in four years than Roosevelt in seven.

Wilson As President Reduced tariffs from 40% to 25%
Makes up for loss of revenue by passing federal income tax. Passes the Clayton Anti-trust Act which spells out activities big business can not engage in such as price cutting. Creates the Federal Trade Commission that orders businesses to stop unfair business practices. Allows unions to exist as long as their activities did not lead to “irreparable injury to property”.

Wilson As President Overhauls the US banking system.
Creates the Federal Reserve System which becomes a federal bank for local banks to try and prevent bank failures. Divides the US into 12 banking districts.

Wilson As President 1916-Runs for reelection and wins with the campaign that he kept us out of WWI that began in 1914.

Limits of Progressivism
Progressives did little to aid: -farmers -non-unionized workers African-Americans *Most of Progressivism comes to an end when the US enters WWI. Only women’s suffrage continues a strong fight.
